There are many different types of therapy, and each has strengths and issues it is most useful for. In trauma therapy, we use a trauma-specific modality to target symptoms of trauma, such as:
Flashbacks or intrusive memories
Negative emotions or negative thoughts about the traumatic event
Avoidance of thoughts of the traumatic event
Staying on high alert or hypervigilance
The main components of trauma therapy normally include:
Intake and history
Resourcing and stabilization techniques to prepare for trauma treatment
Trauma treatment using an appropriate tool. These are tools like
EMDR
Brainspotting
Flash
Prolonged Exposure
Integration and termination
Traditionally, the stabilization and resourcing part of trauma treatment could last for weeks, months, or even years for more severe cases. With more recent research and techniques, we now know that even more complex trauma can be treated quickly using state of the art techniques. In our practice, we accomplish this rapid and intensive treatment using various forms of EMDR. Click here to read more about our approach to therapy.
